Cyber bullying is NOT COOL!
Most of us know of physical and verbal bullies. However, some of us are unaware of cyber bullies! Sometimes when you’re online, a bully will most likely be someone calling you names, or insulting you. Some people ignore it, some people just encourage them by arguing and insulting them back. Your best solution would be to ignore them, leave the cyber area, or tell a moderator/administrator of the website or chat room. Previously, some of my friends have reported getting insulted by people online. People will call them names, and insult them when they don’t even know them! This is where the phrase, “Don’t know me? Don’t judge me,” would come in. Nobody has the right to insult you, especially if they don’t know you! Think, if you wouldn’t do it to someone’s face, what makes you think it’s fine to insult over the web? They think they can get away with it, but they can’t. I’ve been cyber bullied several times before. Sometimes I uncontrollably fight back. Other times, I may leave, contact a site administrator, or contradict their logic. Contradicting is a good way to prove your side of the conflict is the right idea. For example, someone may call me fat, or stupid. My average response would be, “If you don’t know me in real life, there is no possible way you would know anything about me.” They me keep calling me names, so I would ignore them, or, of course, contact a moderator/admin. Here are some solutions to stop a cyber bully:
- Ignore them. On most chat rooms, there will be an ‘Ignore’ button. If you ignore the bully, you will not be able to see what they’re saying. If there is not one, you can just ignore what they’re saying.
- Contact a site administrator or moderator. Sometimes there may be a ‘Report’ button. You can report a user for a number of reasons, or you can send an email to a site admin.
- If this act is serious, contact authorities, such as the police. If someone threatens to illegally access your computer (hacking), exploit you using personal information, contact the police or a cyber security representative.
- Contradict their logic. Example: “You’re an idiot and you’re fat!” Response: “There is no possible way, ever, that you could know anything about me due to the fact that you don’t know me in real life.”
- You may also positively respond to these insults. Example: “I hate you and you fail!” Response: “Thanks!” or “I’m going to go on your account and exploit you!” Response: “Good luck with that!” You know you don’t mean it, and most likely, the people around you won’t, either!
- NOTE: Defending yourself in a negative way against the bully is not a solution. You’re just as guilty as the bully, and you will face the same consequences as the him/her.

Don't let cyber bullies get to you!
Cyber bullies bully for a few reasons. Most of them attempt to gain power over people. They pick out what seem to be easy targets or victims, and attempt to assert power over them. Another reason is due to real-life occurrences. Sometimes, when a relative dies, parents divorce, or something else that negatively effects your life occurs, some people may feel the urge to release their emotions against other people. In some cases, you may be able to actually calm a bully down, and maybe become friends with them! This method is not used very often, but it has been proven to work! Bullies are usually ignorant predators, looking for vulnerable prey. As I referred to before, “Don’t know me? Don’t judge me” is a good quote used to defend yourself. Ignorance is a serious and very common form of bullying. It not only occurs virtually, but in reality, too! Racism and prejudice are example of ignorance. People may insult you based on your skin color, heritage, hobbies, social life, appearance, taste in music, and other things that relate to you. If anyone does this to someone, they are considered ignorant. If they don’t know you or anything about you, they have no right to insult you based on who you are, or what you do. Cyber bullying is a serious matter that occurs everywhere. Hopefully, the next time you encounter a cyber bully, you will look back at the solutions listed, and use them. Use this information to help yourself, and others! Bullies don’t have any right to insult anyone! Cyber bullying must come to an end. Hopefully, I’ve proven my point, and people will use this information! Want to Report a bully? Follow this link! - http://www.mrpearse.com/bully2.html
